"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you" (James 4:8a, ESV)
One thing I ask from the LORD,
this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. - Psalm 27:4 (NIV) |
A Formational Approach To Scripture Reading:
Sometimes we are tempted to read Scripture merely for information. Psalm 1 however tells us that we are blessed as we meditate on it - which brings formation to our hearts, minds and wills. Consider trying the following formational approach to Scripture as you read it: Relax: Breathe deeply and relax, and be aware of God's Presence with you. As you breathe deeply, you may wish to pray silently, "Come Lord Jesus," or "Holy Spirit Come." Read: Read the whole passage, or a portion of the passage aloud, then close your eyes and rest in silence with God for about 2 minutes. Reflect: Reflect on the Scripture, reading it all again - or any parts which previously stood out to you. Ask yourself, "Is God inviting me in some way to respond to him, or his will, through his Word?" Rest in silence with God in reflection, for about 2 minutes. Rest: Read the whole portion, or parts of the Scripture passage again, then simply rest with God - for about 2 minutes in silence - savoring the words he has given to you during this reading.
